On November 9th, 2020, flightunit is launching the incredible 7-Day Leadership Challenge. The challenge involves seven straight days of developing and practicing crucial leadership skills with the aim of turning at least 1 million people across the globe into better leaders.

Being a great leader is about spreading positivity and inspiration to everyone around you. The best leaders in the world are highly skilled and motivated people who do their best to raise the spirits and the standards of everyone they interact with. Everyone has the potential to be a great leader, and the first step to becoming a leader is working on yourself.

flightunit has designed the 7-Day Leadership Challenge around seven crucial skills for being a great leader. Each day focuses on developing a specific skill, so that by the end of the challenge, you’ll have a full leadership skillset that you’ll be able to make the world a better place! Join the challenge and build your leadership skills right away!

Here’s a breakdown of every skill that the Leadership Challenge will help you build:

1. Communication

To be able to lead, you need to able to listen.

Communication involves two main elements: speaking and listening. To be an effective speaker, make sure to follow the golden rule: “quality over quantity.” When you’re communicating with anyone, whether a friend, a family member, or a co-worker, always try to speak as simply and as clearly as possible. If your conversation partner doesn’t seem to grasp your meaning, try to explain yourself in a different way.

To be an effective listener, pay attention and ask questions. Humans are easily distracted—it’s easy to zone out when someone else is talking, but being a good leader means paying close attention to your conversation partner so that you make sure you fully understand what they’re saying. Asking good questions in conversation can also help you understand, and it shows that you’re interested in what they have to say.

2. Discipline

All the world’s best leaders have discipline, from Prime Ministers to CEOs to Professional Coaches.

Discipline is what allows you to avoid temptation and to keep yourself focused on accomplishing your goals—it’s the key to constantly moving forward in life. Discipline involves using your willpower to make short-term sacrifices for long-term benefit, whether the benefit is for your health, your mind, or your spirit.

While discipline is one of the toughest leadership skills to develop, it also comes with a massive reward. Once you have discipline, you’ll suddenly find it easy to study for that extra hour or to say no to those donuts. More importantly, you’ll be able to use your discipline to make sacrifices for your leadership. You’ll be able to take the focus off yourself and move it to making the world a better place for everyone.

3. Humility

One of the common pitfalls for leaders is that they become too arrogant—they lose sight of what’s important in life and why it’s important to be a leader in the first place.

All great leaders need humility. Leaders need to be able to recognize that, while they may have a position of knowledge or a position of power, they’re no more entitled than anyone else. Humility allows a leader to recognize that everyone has value and that everyone makes mistakes, so that they’ll be able to learn and grow alongside their community as they strive to improve.

4. Growth

The best leaders in the world constantly strive for growth. If the aim of leadership is to inspire and guide others to become better people, then a great leader should always be improving, too.

Make sure to pay constant attention to everyone you speak with and every experience you have, and always look for ways that you can grow from those interactions and experiences. Growth isn’t limited to accomplishments, either. Great leaders make sure they’re always growing physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. If you want to change the world through leadership, make sure you’re always growing into the best version of yourself that you can be.

5. Comfort Zone

Great leaders are always leaving their comfort zone and trying new things.

Improvement can only come from areas outside your comfort zone—the more you put yourself in uncomfortable but educational experiences, the easier it’ll become to try new things in the future. Being able to step out of your comfort zone is crucial for facing challenges. Great leaders need to be able to adapt and take risks in the face of obstacles so that they can quickly and efficiently overcome their barriers.

Push yourself to do extra chores tomorrow. Go for a jog later tonight. Force yourself to ask three insightful questions during your next zoom meeting. If you constantly step out of your comfort zone, you’ll soon be able to fearlessly lead your community through anything.

6. Gratitude

An often overlooked but essential leadership trait is gratitude. It’s easy to get too focused on the goals that you’re chasing and to forget all the blessings that you already have.

Take time every day to think about all the ways that you’re fortunate in life, including simple things like having a roof over your head and food on your dinner plate. Practicing daily gratitude can provide surprising happiness and motivation that will keep you energized and moving forward.

Gratitude is especially important for leaders. You can’t be a leader if there’s nobody to lead! The world’s best leaders stay grateful for the people who help them and the people who they help. With gratitude, leaders can constantly spread love to everyone around them, which is a natural way to help people get motivated and improve!

7. Patience

Being a leader involves interacting with people and helping them through challenging situations, which can sometimes get frustrating. The best leaders in the world all possess incredible patience, which is the ability to remain calm, focused, and logical in the face of difficulty.

Practicing patience will help you overcome any obstacle that you face. Moreover, demonstrating patience will provide courage to everyone around you—they’ll think that if you can stay calm and collected in the face of adversity, then they can, too!

10 Daily Habits of Successful People

When we look at some of the most successful people in the world, we’re awestruck by how much they’re able to accomplish and how fearless they seem. Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, Richard Branson—the gap between their lifestyle and ours can seem enormous. However, if we put the life of a successful person under a microscope, we’ll find that the keys to their success are strikingly simple: it all boils down to habit.

Entrepreneur Jim Rohn said that “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” So, if habits are so important for success, which ones will make you the most successful?

Here are 10 daily habits of some of the most successful people:

1. Wake Up Early

A successful day is built on momentum. The more tasks you complete, the easier it is to do the next task. The best way to kick-start that momentum is to wake up early.

Waking up before everyone else feels empowering. It feels like you have a head-start on everyone else. If you consistently wake up early, say, at 5:00 AM, while the rest of the world wakes up at 8:00 AM, you’ll have plenty of quiet time to yourself so you can focus on tackling the most difficult tasks of the day. Soon, you’ll find yourself halfway through your daily work while everyone else is scrambling to eat breakfast and get started.

2. Set and Review Your Goals

Right after you wake up, take a few minutes to make a list of goals for the day, and to review any long-term goals that you have. Setting and reviewing goals will keep you focused on the finish line and motivated to keep working through boredom and distraction.

These goals can be anything from “finish the accounting report” to “vacuum and mop.” Write down anything and everything that you want to complete, and make sure to soak in the satisfaction of crossing an item off your list once it’s done.

As Benjamin Franklin said, “For every minute spent in organizing, an hour is earned.”

To be successful, making a list of tasks is only half the battle. If the tasks are too big, too vague, or too disordered, trying to accomplish them will only lead to frustration and anxiety. Take time to organize your tasks.

Make sure all your daily, monthly, and long-term tasks are broken down into manageable pieces. Also, make sure they’re in an order that makes sense. For example, having “write a book” as a daily goal isn’t helpful—there’s no way you’ll be able to complete it in a day. However, having individual goals like “write a plot outline” and “design the main character” are manageable and rewarding. Also, completing some goals will make it easier to complete others. Successful people make sure to order their tasks so that they can be as efficient as possible.

4. Remove Distractions

Successful people carefully design their daily environments so that they never face distractions.

Take a moment to think about all the ways that you get distracted throughout your day. Maybe your phone buzzes every five minutes with a notification. Maybe your family is loud while you’re trying to work in the living room. Maybe you have music or television playing in the background and find your mind wandering off.

Whatever your distractions are, make a list of them, then try to fix as many as possible. Silence your phone while you’re working. Move your home-office into your bedroom. Shut off the music and the television.

Removing distractions will keep you focused on your tasks, which will provide a surprising boost to your productivity.

5. Stay Connected with Important People

Success often stems from having a large, trustworthy network. Nobody can take on the world on their own, and nobody is perfect at everything. We all need connections with people that have different strengths to help us along the path to our dreams. Make sure you take time to improve your existing business connections and to forge new connections whenever you can.

However, “important people” doesn’t just mean business connections! Family and friends are often two of the biggest sources of happiness and motivation. Give your parents a call. Check in on your old roommates. Invite your siblings to dinner. Spend some quality time with your spouse or your kids.

Make sure you stay connected not only to those that help you in the business world, but to those who make up your personal world. Both these areas need to be fulfilled to reach success.

6. Read Often

Successful people are always learning, and one of the best ways to learn is to read.

Make a goal of reading for at least half an hour each day. Reading consistently will sharpen your mind and will allow you to learn new skills and information that can help you in many different areas of your life.

The books you read don’t necessarily need to be about your business or hobbies, either—go ahead and enjoy some Stephen King! Reading improves your communication skills, so no matter which book you choose, you’ll end up a more effective person, on the path to success.

7. Exercise Daily

Successful people not only keep their minds sharp, they keep their bodies sharp, too.

Consistent exercise improves your energy, motivation, mood, and resilience, so that you can take on any obstacle that the world throws your way. Like reading, make a goal to exercise for at least half an hour each day.

With exercise, the key is variety. Make sure you constantly change the way you exercise so that you’re always excited to get your body moving. You can go for a walk, ride your bike, play basketball, lift weights, have a dance party—the possibilities are endless. Just make sure to stay active as often as possible. It’s a lot easier to reach success when you feel great along the way.  

8. Make Nutrition a Priority

Nutrition goes hand-in-hand with exercise.

Successful people make sure to eat a healthy, balanced diet that gives them the energy they need to seize the day and accomplish their goals.

Start each day with a light and healthy breakfast. Drink lots of water, eat fruits and veggies, stick to lean protein, and avoid foods with a lot of sugar or salt. Also, try not to eat too close to when you go to sleep. Eating too close to bedtime can make it difficult to fall asleep, making you more tired for the following day.

9. Get Enough Sleep

Despite what you might think, spending more time awake and working doesn’t mean you’ll be more successful. Most of the world’s leading CEOs—Bill Gates, Tim Cook, Jeff Bezos—get an average of 7 hours of sleep each night, and sometimes even that isn’t enough!

Being tired throughout the day can be a huge blow to your productivity. The time you “gain” from staying awake longer, you lose from constant yawning, dozing off, and burnout. To give yourself the best shot at success, make sure you’re getting enough sleep each night, and make sure the sleep is consistent. Try to go to bed and wake up at around the same time every day—this will help you feel rested, because your body will be used to the sleep pattern.

10. Embrace Failure

Life is full of learning opportunities. Unfortunately, most of those learning opportunities come from failure.

Many people are afraid of failure, but failure is one of the keys to success. Attack every task without being afraid to fail, and know that if you do, it’s okay! The important thing is that when you fail, be sure to identify why you failed and how you can avoid failing again next time.

If you truly make an effort to develop habits like daily exercise, waking up early, and embracing failure, success suddenly won’t seem so far away. The most successful people in the world aren’t machines—they’re human, just like us. That means that if they can do it, so can you. Stay motivated, organized, and connected. How to Be a Leader During COVID-19

Since early March 2020, the world has undergone a scary and unprecedented change unlike anything most people have ever seen. COVID-19 has brought a wave of stress to everyone—male and female, young and old, rich and poor. The pandemic has forced us to adapt to a strange new lifestyle full of hand scrubbing, mask wearing, and social distancing.

At flightunit, we’ve always said that the world needs more leaders. And now, in the wake of COVID-19, we need leaders more than ever.

Here’s how to be a leader during COVID-19:

Set a Good Example

One of the best ways to be a leader is to set a good example. Follow the rules, be courteous to everyone you meet, and always work as hard as you can. If you set a good example, others will naturally follow.

Since the “rules” of the world have changed because of COVID-19, setting a good example involves some things you may not have thought of before:

  • Wear a mask as much as you can. If someone who is forgetful or neglectful simply sees you wearing one, they may just remember for next time. If you see someone without a mask who should be wearing one, don’t be afraid to speak up, but make sure to be polite!
  • Do your best to distance from everybody. If you’re on a collision-course in a tight area, stop and let the other person go with a friendly wave and nod.
  • Carry disinfecting wipes and use them on surfaces you’ve touched. If you’ve just piled your groceries onto the counter or entered your PIN on a payment machine, give it a wipe for the person behind you.
  • Offer (safe) help however you can. Right now, everyone is struggling in some way. Don’t hesitate to help anyone who needs it, as long as you can engage safely.

Whenever you go out in public, whether to shop for groceries or to visit a friend, constantly remind yourself to set a good example. Be a leader by acting in a safe and positive manner so that those around you will do the same.

Bring Positivity to Everyone (Including Yourself)

Optimism is an immensely powerful and often underrated tool. One of the best things that we can do during a time of crisis like COVID-19 is to stay positive.

To spread positivity to yourself, start every morning by making a short list of things that you’re grateful for. You can include everything from “your life” to “the delicious salad you’re going to have for dinner.” The focus on gratitude will remind you that life is valuable and to be positive about getting to live another beautiful day.

Next, plan out your activities for the day and explain to yourself exactly how and why you’re going to excel at them. The focus on your skills and specific activities will help you stay in the present and be more positive about the individual experiences that fill your beautiful day.

To spread positivity to others, try not to talk about the virus. Conversations that involve death tolls, vaccine wait-times, and infection numbers are sure to bring everyone down. Be a leader by keeping everyone’s mind off the pandemic and instead filling their heads with happy thoughts. Compliment their outfit, talk about the weather, play a game—whatever it takes to keep your family and your flightunit happy and motivated.

Encourage Others

A little encouragement can go a long way, especially during a time where everyone is feeling down.

Although COVID-19 is an immense challenge for everyone, the world is still pressing on. Kids still need to go to school and adults still need to work. Unfortunately, the thick raincloud that is the pandemic can make it hard to find the drive to get work done.

Be a leader by encouraging others to carry on and keep doing great things. Whether you’re with your family, your flightunit, or someone on the street who seems a little depressed, always look for ways to encourage people. Compliment your mom on how she was able to do all her reports from home in the same amount of time. Remind your friend that he has incredible artistic talent and that you can’t wait to see his next painting.

Who knows? Your encouragement might be exactly what someone needs to get through these tough times with a smile.

Communicate as Much as Possible

In life, communication is crucial. Now that COVID-19 has put a stop to most social interaction, communication is more important than ever.

Humans are social creatures. We use communication to exchange information, make each other laugh, help each other cope, relate to one another, and much more. Communication makes us all feel good. Talking to our friends and family is like nourishment for the mind and the soul. Be a leader by making sure that everyone in your social circle is getting that nourishment—communicate as much as possible.

Take some time to call your dad and ask him about his favorite show. Text your friends and let them know that if they need anything, you’ll be there for them. The simple act of checking in on someone to ask, “how’s it going?” can often make their entire day.

Be Honest and Clear

Right now, the world is full of confusion. People don’t know the nature of the virus, they don’t know whether they’ll be able to keep their job, and they don’t know when the pandemic is going to end.

Since COVID-19 is causing so much confusion, be a leader by being honest and clear with everyone that you deal with—create as little confusion as you can. Being honest and transparent is about making your own life and everyone else’s lives easier. If you’re straightforward with people, whether your mom, your sister, your best friend, or your boss, it will save everyone time and energy.

As humans, we need to be facing the world’s problems as a team (a team that you can lead!). Being honest and keeping everyone on the same page is the first step toward making that team strong. 

Leaders stare uncertainty in the face with confidence and act when nobody else will. Leaders inspire and encourage those around them to stay motivated and follow their dreams. Most importantly, leaders squash fear for themselves and others to make sure their team will be victorious in the face of any challenge.

Right now, there’s plenty of fear to go around. That’s why the world needs more leaders—to squash the fear of COVID-19 and make sure everyone stays happy, healthy, and motivated to take down the virus as a community.

The 5 Feathers of Kobe Bryant’s Legacy

In the early hours of Sunday, January 26th, 2020 NBA Legend Kobe Bryant was involved in a fatal helicopter crash that claimed his life and that of seven other passengers, including Kobe’s daughter, Gianna.

It was only a week prior to the accident that a clip was released showing Kobe and Gianna sitting courtside at a basketball game enjoying quality father-daughter time. In the clip, Kobe is leaning in and explaining different plays and elements of the sport he excelled at for so long. The day before his passing, Kobe congratulated fellow athlete Lebron James on Twitter for taking the 3rd spot to surpass his scoring record – a rare feat due to the competitive nature of basketball.

When news broke of the helicopter crash, the world exploded with an outcry of shock and grief.

Kobe was a legend in the basketball community and an example of excellence on the world stage. Few athletes see career longevity and success the way that Kobe did. After his illustrious 20-season career, Kobe retired at age 37 and even went on to film an Oscar-winning documentary. He founded multiple youth sports foundations and a sports academy where he coached, all while remaining a loving, devoted family man to his daughters and wife. He lived a full life.

The countless conversations following Kobe’s death illustrate the immense impact that his life had on the world. His sudden death reminds us of the fragility of life and to use now as the perfect time to work toward actualizing our capabilities.

While the media coverage and tributes have faded, we at Flightunit are able to gather what we call the five feathers, or what Kobe would call the “Mamba Mentality,” to soar above obstacles and challenges.

Feather #1: Passion

Kobe always had the DNA and the mindset of an elite basketball player. Being born to a father who was a successful NBA player, it’s no surprise that he physically excelled at the sport. But, physical prowess isn’t all it takes – passion is also crucial to success.

Kobe loved basketball and cultivated passion for it from the tender age of 2.  In his early years, he would feel uncomfortable and insufficient if he went too long without holding a basketball. While in school, Kobe would arrive early to practice drills with his coach. Sometimes he would even practice alone, with only the school janitor watching. Kobe never needed to be forced to practice – there was a natural pull toward basketball. This “natural pull” is important when discovering the direction of our passion. We must remember to listen to it.

Feather #2: Obsession

Passion isn’t always enough to rise to the top. Kobe was obsessed with basketball. His obsession was evident in how he studied the intricate and ever-changing details of the game to become an icon of the sport. From knowing the smell and sound of dribbling a basketball to understanding different players’ signature moves, Kobe was truly intrigued by every facet of the game.

Passion combined with obsession is required to achieve outstanding levels of greatness. Although Kobe’s obsessive nature sometimes rubbed competitors and teammates the wrong way, it also led to him being the youngest player in NBA history to reach 30,000 career points.

Feather #3: Relentlessness

Kobe’s early years in basketball took place in Italy, where he was taller and faster than most other boys his age. At 11, Kobe moved to the United States to continue his dream, but quickly realized that he lost his physical advantage – his competitors in the U.S. were much taller and stronger than him. Though he suffered some initial embarrassment, Kobe used his disadvantages to fuel his motivation to train. He wanted to be better. He wanted to be the best. His unyielding approach led him to practice to the point of excellence. He was drafted into the NBA straight out of high school at age 18, the youngest player in history at the time, and had a spectacular career as an athlete with 5 NBA championships, 2 Olympic gold medals, and as an 18-time NBA All-Star.

To be the best version of yourself, you need to be relentless in the face of challenges. Every day, you must commit to the quest relentlessly and not succumb to shortcomings.

Feather #4: Resilience

Despite his skills and successes, Kobe didn’t have a perfect slate. His career was complicated by instances of conflict – whether with coaches, teammates, competitors, or the greater public. Kobe’s most notable incident was in 2003, when he was charged with sexual assault. Kobe proclaimed himself innocent and the charges were later dropped as he and the accuser reached a civil settlement. After that, a dark cloud hung over him. He faced endless media backlash and a tarnished reputation. This motivated Kobe to brand himself with the nickname “Black Mamba” to separate the personal negative media coverage from his basketball efforts. He continued to step onto the court with a resilient, stone-cold “Mamba” attitude.

Relentlessness applied in times of challenge or hardship gives one the ability to push forward and recover, regardless of how heavy, dark, or difficult the situation. This practice builds resiliency and is crucial towards self-actualization.

Feather #5: Fearlessness

Kobe’s entire life is a demonstration of fearlessness. From an early age, Kobe was aware of his dream and chased it – he wanted to be the best basketball player in the world. He fearlessly pursued his goal, not knowing whether he would achieve it or fail. By the time he retired at 37, he had undoubtedly achieved that goal, considering the legacy he created. Following Kobe’s passing, it was announced that he would be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in late August of 2020.

Recognizing and claiming our desires is something that most of people are afraid of. The uncertainty of achievement often plants seeds of fear that overgrow and overwhelm. When we focus on the distance between our position and our goals, it’s easy to get discouraged and deny our desires. However, it’s the process and steps to achieving goals through cultivating the ethics outlined above that we should focus on.

Although Kobe retired in 2016, his core ethics continue to help and thrive in the development of players, both young and old, at his Mamba Foundation Legacy. Moreover, as one career ended for Kobe new ones grew. Prior to his passing, he had undertaken new endeavours of storytelling, and was more engaged in his primary role as a father and a husband.

Implementing all five of these feathers can be a huge challenge. However, if they’re effectively applied, we will see an incredible outcome. We can start by fearlessly accepting our passion for our dreams, obsessing over the journey, relentlessly applying ourselves in pursuit of growth, and remaining resilient in the face of challenges or shortcomings.

Though, for Kobe Bryant, we mourn the death of a passionate life, we can leverage the teaching and practices found within these five feathers to carry on the legacy and fuel our journey to soar to our highest potential.
